QMC postdoc in Melbourne, Australia

Post by Manolo Per »

The Position:
We are currently seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to undertake fundamental
research in the development of electronic-structure Quantum Monte Carlo methods
within the Materials Science and Engineering division.

This project will develop and implement new features in Quantum Monte Carlo,
including practical methods for routinely determining accurate equilibrium geometries
and reaction barriers in structures ranging from molecules to solids and surfaces.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with other members of the group to implement these
features and apply them to a wide variety of problems of scientific interest.

Specifically you will:

*Develop and implement practical approaches for obtaining accurate equilibrium
geometries and reaction barriers using Quantum Monte Carlo methods.
*Contribute to the general development of Quantum Monte Carlo methods, and their
application to scientific problems.
*Construct a set of best practices for performing efficient Quantum Monte Carlo
calculations.
*Produce high quality scientific and technical outputs including journal articles
and conference presentations.
*Collaborate with other members of the group and external collaborators.
*Develop innovative concepts and ideas for further research.
*Participate in CSIROs postdoctoral training program.

Location: Parkville, Victoria
Salary: AUD$81k 88k p.a plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Ref no: VIC13/04088
Tenure: 3 year term

To be successful you will have:

*A PhD degree (or will shortly satisfy the requirements for a PhD degree)
in computational chemistry/physics/materials science, and no more than 3 years
relevant post-doctoral experience.
*Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
*High proficiency in writing scientific computer programs (preferably in
Fortran), and experience using high-performance supercomputing facilities.
*Demonstrated originality, creativity and innovation in solving problems
and introducing new directions and approaches.
*Demonstrated ability to think independently under minimal supervision
while contributing to overall team performance, and proven ability to meet
performance deadlines during the course of a project.
*Ability to work with people from varying research backgrounds, and
evidence of strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability
to publish results of research in scientific journals.
*Experience with electronic-structure Quantum Monte Carlo methods and
experience in developing software for quantum chemistry and/or condensed matter
physics would be desirable.
