Postdoc in Quantum Monte Carlo for High Pressure Materials

Postby Ron_Cohen » Tue Sep 09, 2014 9:46 am

Research Associate in Quantum Monte Carlo for High Pressure Materials

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7 and funded for two years in the first instance. The salary range will be £33,353 - £40,313 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

The post focuses on performing Quantum Monte Carlo for crystals and liquid snapshots. The post focuses on using Diffusion Monte Carlo and Density Functional Theory (DFT) for Condensed Matter to improve our understanding and predictive ability for high pressure phase transitions and material properties. Emphasis will be on materials where standard methods such as DFT are not sufficiently accurate.

The post is funded by the European Research Council Advanced Grant ToMCaT (Theory of Mantle, Core, and Technological Materials, which will constrain properties of a wide range of materials and search for new useful materials. This position is in collaboration with the Deep Carbon Observatory, the Thomas Young Centre and the London Centre for Nanotechnology.

Applicants will have a PhD, or thesis submitted and subject to examination, in a physical science. Experience with first-principles density functional theory methods, community electronic structure codes such as ABINIT or quantum espresso, and experience with high performance computing and programme development and debugging in Linux is essential. Experience with Quantum Monte Carlo is highly desirable. Knowledge of graduate level condensed matter physics, chemistry and electronic structure and density functional theory, and the ability to perform computational research with Linux clusters, debug code and port codes to new systems is essential.

Closing Date: 30 September 2014. To apply visit the UCL jobs website http://www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs/ and search for job ref 1433309.
