"If we wanted to make conjectures one could say that, given its situation not far from an exceedingly narrow little path bordered on the opposite side by a horrid precipice, and seeing it enclosed by a great wall, it could have served in ancient times as a fortress from which to defend that narrow pass that leads to the nearby castle in Valico, the crossing of which might have made it considerably simpler to invade a part of the Garfagnana."
